Navy blue snowflake pattern: description

This free snowflake cross stitch pattern has no tree on it and no greeting, so the finished piece can go up in late November and stay on the wall until the thaw. It works as Christmas cross stitch in December and as a quiet picture in navy and pale blue the rest of the winter, large enough at 56 by 63 stitches to hang alone.

How do you stitch six arms from the centre?

Start in the solid navy core where the arms meet and finish one arm before moving to the next, so a miscount shows up while it is still a few stitches to unpick. The vertical axis runs between two columns, and the point of the upper arm is two stitches wide.

Count the upper arm and the upper right arm carefully, side branches included. The left half of the chart mirrors the right half stitch for stitch, so the upper left arm is the upper right arm read backwards. On a square grid the upright and diagonal arms have different steps and the lower half differs from the upper in places, so keep the chart open for those.

Which blue goes first?

Navy, DMC 336. It makes up most of the stitches and forms one connected shape. DMC 3755 follows: each tip is a small island, and on the back you can slide the pale thread under the navy stitches to reach the next one. The background stays bare, so a thread carried across a gap between branches will show on the front, navy most of all. If the next area lies across open cloth, finish off and start again.

Hoop, card or cushion corner?

At 10.2 by 11.4 cm on Aida 14 a wooden hoop is the simplest finish; leave a margin so the points stay clear of the rim. A card needs a large blank with an aperture or a higher count fabric. On a cushion it sits well in one corner, as an Aida patch sewn to the cover with a lining behind to hide the thread ends.

White fabric gives the sharpest contrast. Cream warms it up, and pale grey or ice blue softens the tips because 3755 gets close to the cloth. Navy sinks into dark fabric, so on charcoal or deep burgundy swap 336 for a white thread and leave 3755 as it is.

The main colours are DMC 336 Navy Blue (77%) and DMC 3755 Baby Blue (23%). On 14-count Aida it comes out at 10.2×11.4 cm, on 18-count at 7.9×8.9 cm. You'll need about 3 skeins of DMC floss.
